My experience as a Singing and Piano online teacher

I am a a singing, piano and general music teacher, having taught for many years.

Not long ago, a year more or less, I began to teach everything I usually do, remotely.

At the beginning I admit I had my doubts about teaching my subjects outside of the classroom, where it had always been traditionally.

In keeping with that tradition, learning would have to be similar that offered by ‘Correspondence Courses,’ something that I’d never planned on as a teacher. However, after a year of teaching remotely, I realized that the web has much more to offer than ‘Correspondence Courses,’ because the key is in the innovation of online communication, instant communication as it is today, and the possibility of having contact with students who can respond to the teacher in a way that is almost immediate, with only the need for a webcam and microphone!

Although it seems to me that generally there are doubts about this way of learning, I have been able to provide remote classes, for example, to a student in the province of Santa Fe, in a town where the nearest piano teacher was 200km (124 miles) away (I should have said that I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina). I provide classes to a woman in Usuahia (southern tip of Argentina) where the only teacher who taught singing wasn’t to her liking; a gentleman in Jujuy Province (north Argentina), who, with all the keyboards in his house, could play absolutely nothing since he didn’t know anything about music and because his job in accountancy meant he didn’t have the time to go out to a teacher where now a remote teacher has provided him with all the facilities he needs. More about my students, I have one in Valencia (Spain) who started with a “terrible” untrained ear and through my lessons has now given two recitals. There is another in Poland (Spanish) who also takes the curriculum slowly both in singing and piano.

I feel very encouraged in all cases because whatever the reason, distance, time, inability to accompany young children to lessons, or whatever, using the internet in a beneficial way for us all can be very interesting and productive!
